This list may no longer be valid. Though I am perfectly willing to pay a reasonable amount to BMI, ASSCAP and SESAC, they are not willing to accept a reasonable amount. Stage Door presents music once a month for two hours - generally presenting traditional celtic or other ethnic music or original songs performed by the people that wrote them - like Tracy Grammer and Blame Sally. BMI accepts $320 per year for some venues but wants $680 a year from me because of the size of the building my business occupies - not the actual usage. How convenient. Ascap wants over $700 a year and SESAC even more. I present not more than 26 songs per month - most of which are definitely not cover songs. The amount they are demanding amounts to $2,180. Divided by the number of songs played in a year that amounts to $7 per song. If every song we played were actually 'covers', that would still be exorbitant. It is a fact that less that a quarter of all music played could ever be construed as a 'cover'. If I could get the three to accept a number I could actually pay I'd pay it. I'd be willing to pay them each $350 per year - a figure that would more than compensate for any 'infringement' we might incur, and that I could actually afford. I don't believe, however, that they will be willing agree to anything like this. Their 'pricing policies' are evidently unnegotiable. So don't expect to be seeing live music at the Stage Door much longer unless a: the agencies agree to reasonable fees or b: I inherit a bunch of money to underwrite these peoples' demands. Sorry. If the community were conscious of the value of having live music in their community and willing to support it, the fees wouldn't be a problem. But they are not. Evidently music is for the rich. Bummer. I had no idea that in trying to keep music alive in this small hamlet I would become an outlaw in the system. I like my community and care about it, but not that much.

Well we got through the West Coast Live show without a hitch. Thanks you all for your participation. Any of you who want to get on our email list of events and announcements can email tomohara@snowcrest.net and we'll add you on.

Sat, Oct 11, 8pm: Ockhams Razor. Adm: $15. This is the third time around at The Door for this group. They've come a long way and are pretty famous now - and their show's are fantastic and very entertaining. Ockham's Razor, based out of Seattle, is a Irish roots band specializing in what they've termed "hard stompin' traditional Irish folk." Though they occasionally play cover tunes they don't play them at the Stage Door, where you will only hear traditional Irish songs or the band's original songs. With the blazing heat of Katie Corcoran's fiddle, the gentle lilt of tin whistles and powerful tenor voice of Kríostóir Clements, the rhythmic charge of Tom Rooney's guitar, the rubber-wristed fury of Oisín Mac Suibhne's bodhrán, the steady, unwavering hand of Nathan Marble on stand-up bass, and the human metronome himself, Dave Forrester, on drum kit, Ockham's Razor is carving out a comfortable niche for themselves in the world of original and traditional Celtic music. Hailed as "a cross between the traditionalism of The Chieftains and the hard stomp originality of the Pogues," in the two short years since forming the Razors have produced two albums (2006's eponymous debut and 2007's Ten Thousand Miles To Bedlam), embarked on two West Coast tours, and opened for Irish music luminaries, The Chieftains. Their album, Ten Thousand Miles To Bedlam, was chosen by Scottish Celtic Radio as Album-of-the-Week in February 2008, and garnered high praise and airtime on radio stations from Canada, the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, and Germany. Ockham's Razor's live shows have proven to be a large draw at various music festivals, including the Northwest Folk Life Festival, the largest folk music festival in the U.S., as well as Highland Games Festivals and folk music showcases. Their youthful and exuberant approach to their originalmusic and performances has gathered reviews as varied as "frenzied and frenetic," "Turbo-Celtic," "Ethnic Punk," and "Seattle's premier Irish band." The band is currently gigging around their home base in the Puget Sound while working on material for their third release. "After opening for the Chieftains, we want to create an album that concentrates on our musicality," says Clements. "With the last album we proved that we can produce a brass-to-the-walls sound with frenzied reels and hard, heavy, stompy beats; this time we want to hone that while refining our ability to really shine within the tradition of great Celtic music."

Fri, Nov 7, 8pm: Corrinne West and The Posse. "For the second straight time, Corinne West has landed on our best-of-the-year lists at Jefferson Public Radio. Second Sight continues to place her among the most masterful Americana singers and songwriters, and the stellar cast of musicians surrounding her support her elegant work with absolute grace. Indeed, one of the best albums of the year." ~ Eric Alan, Music Director, Jefferson Public Radio "...She writes great songs, plays with top flight musicians, sports a killer voice... There is not a bad song on the CD. With this much talent and drive, I imagaine Corinne West will be an important artist on the music scene for some time." ~ Americana Roots.com "Wow, what a voice!! Vocals like this one come around only once in a blue moon, crisp, clear, refreshing, like a fall breeze. " ~ Jeff Rusch, Music Director, KNTI "Corinne West is on her way up. Great songs and powerful singing are going to take her far." ~ Montrose Daily Press, Colorado "Talent. Pure talent." ~ Strickly Country "West's clear voice and emotional delivery are compelling, and she has a lot to say as a songwriter." ~ No Depression "West's evocative voice and poetic yet unpretentious lyrics are perfectly framed." ~ Boston Herald "I love Corinne's music and truly believe in her as an artist. She has spirit, integrity and talent. I am a massive fan." ~ Bob Harris, Legendary British broadcaster, BBC Radio2 Adm: $20.
